Lawrence J. Rhoades, Scientific and Engineering Advisor
We regret to announce the untimely death of our valued colleague, Lawrence Rhoades, an inventor, creative genius, businessman, entrepreneur, and philanthropist, who passed away on Saturday, April 21, 2007, while scuba diving in Hawaii. He was 62 years old. Larry was a special member of the BioEngine and Alito teams over the past couple of years and with his knowledge, vision, and resources made significant and lasting contributions to both companies. He served on the Board of Directors and played a major role in investing his energy and resources in getting both companies off the ground. Larry was instrumental in redesigning and producing our first prototype for animal testing. He will be remembered for his inventive mind, his wise counsel, and for his generous spirit. Our association with Larry was sadly much too short. His reassuring presence and happy nature will be missed by his family, his wide circle of friends, and by those of us who were fortunate enough to know and work with him.

Mr. Rhoades studied Economics and Mechanical Engineering at Brown University and received his M.B.A. from Northwestern University. He was the Chief Executive Officer of The ExOne Company, a developer and supplier of innovative manufacturing technology and equipment. For thirty-five years, he held the same position at Extrude Hone Corporation - the leading global supplier of deburring and finishing systems - serving the majority of the world's largest manufacturers and now a unit of Kennametal, Inc. ExOne has six and Extrude Hone has twenty locations in major manufacturing centers throughout the world. Mr. Rhoades held patents on more than two dozen inventions related to nontraditional manufacturing processes for machining, finishing, forming and measurement.

He chaired the Advisory Committee of the U.S. Export Import Bank, and served on numerous advisory groups for the U.S. Department of Defense and the Department of Commerce, addressing both technologies and business practices related to manufacturing. Mr. Rhoades served on the Boards of the National Center for Manufacturing Sciences, the National Institute for Standards and Technology's (NIST) Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) Program, the Western Pennsylvania's MEP Center (Catalyst Connection), which he chaired from 1995 through 2000, and the Society of Manufacturing Engineers' Education Foundation. He chaired the Board of the Association for Manufacturing Technology (AMT) in 2003. In June of 2001, he was elected a Fellow of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers and was appointed to the Pennsylvania Bar Association's Judicial Evaluation Commission.

He served on the Boards of Gardner Publications, Inc., Concurrent Technologies Corporation, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix Association, the National Center for Defense Manufacturing & Machining, and the Doyle Center for Defense Manufacturing, which he chaired through June, 2005. He was a Council Member of the National Academies' Government-University-Industry Research Roundtable, and served on the Board for Manufacturing and Engineering Design for the National Academy of Engineering.

Mr. Rhoades was the recipient of the Pittsburgh Business Times' 2003 Manufacturer of the Year Award, and was named the Ernst & Young Master Entrepreneur of the Year for Western Pennsylvania in 2003, and the Pittsburgh Venture Capital Association's Outstanding Entrepreneur of 2005.
